2/10
Favorite Track: "T.D." Least Favorite Track: "Can't Go"
Lil Yachty is one of the most unique figures in hip hop of the 2010. The appeal of his music becomes increasingly hard for me to see with every record he puts out. Each project since his original Lil Boat mixtape has had one or two songs on it that are tolerable, but the rest just feels oversaturated and mind-numbingly boring. His most recent record, Lil Boat 3, is no exception. The first glaring issue with this record is that every single one of his features on this LP completely and utterly outperform him. The song “T.D.”, which is without a doubt my favorite on the record, totes feature verses from big names like A$AP Rocky, Tierra Whack, and Tyler, The Creator. On this track, Yachty spits a relatively weak verse at the start of the song, before the features on the song have a field day, each of them delivering a better verse than the last, completely blowing Yachty out of the water. These kinds of comparisons don’t stop here, with songs across the record sporting features from some of hip hop’s biggest names like Drake, Young Thug, DaBaby, Lil Durk, and Future, and yet again, every single rapper on this list outperforms Yachty. The disappointment doesn’t stop with the features however, with some of the solo songs also being exceptionally terrible, the most notable of the bunch being the track “Can’t Go”, which features some of the most laughably corny vocal inflections I have ever heard in a piece of music. The final issue that I take with this record is the insane amount of oversaturation shown here. With 19 songs and 53 minutes in runtime, nearly every single track follows the same formula again and again, making for a listen that makes 53 minutes feel more like 2 hours of pure boredom. The limited amount of good things I can say about Lil Boat 3, like an occasional bouncy flow from Yachty or some decent production choices, are completely outnumbered by the endless amount of repetitive lyrics and flows backed up by painfully similar beats over and over again.
