North Carolina isn’t the first state that comes to mind when discussing the rap game; lately there has been an effort to change that. As DaBaby burst onto the scene last year, so did a growing effort to elevate the southern state’s rap status. In turn, the NC native brought in a team he thought was fit for the job. The most notable wingman being, Stunna 4 Vegas, who released his debut project last year as well. If you read my review of BIG 4x you will recall that I found it to feature offensive and annoying production, and not much else. His new album, RICH YOUNGIN, isn’t much better. Stunna 4 Vegas is more or less a modern gangsta rapper. His style features an abrasive and aggressive delivery, violent lyrics, and barebones production with 808’s that could blow out even the most elite of Honda Civic subwoofers. However, when I look at this project track for track I can’t see why anyone would choose this run of the mill, uninspired, project over a record from the countless names in this niche that are executing this sound in a way that is four times more interesting, (see what I did there?). Personally, I’d rather blare a number of names while exceeding the speed limit on my local freeway, site Shootergang Kony or Tee Grizzley for examples. The production on BIG 4x was awfully annoying, specifically on tracks like “4th Of July (feat. Offset), or “Fuckery”, both of which featured melodies that to this day give me headaches, but on RICH YOUNGIN it’s just boring. It’s not just the production though, it’s virtually every other sonic element of the album. There is a stretch between tracks #5-#9, that I can barely remember, and I listened to this album six times. The one piece of praise I can hand RICH YOUNGIN is that it’s production isn’t as bad as BIG 4X and it adds some guests that are slightly more interesting (just slightly). Stunna’s flow isn’t bad, it's just bland and boring - the same goes for the lyrics here where he really sticks to his guns, both literally and metaphorically. In the end you can add this one to the list of hundreds of other incredibly middle of the road trap albums to come out of this decade. Stunna 4 Vegas has nothing to say.
