REVIEW: Tyler, The Creator - IGOR

Updated: Feb 7, 2022

9.5/10 Favorite Track: "Earfquake" Least Favorite Track: "I Don't, Love You Anymore"

On his sixth studio album and most critically acclaimed effort yet, Tyler, The Creator issues his listeners a project that is simultaneously as reliant on the story arch as it is the sound. Similar to much of his previous work; IGOR is an avenue to direct a character. On Goblin and Wolf Tyler was representing an embodiment of his trauma and inner struggle through the representation of an album being a therapy session. Similarly on IGOR, Tyler depicts a love story, retelling his personal account and obsession with a significant other from the eyes of himself as well as his psychotic, unreasonable, and obsessive alter ego: IGOR. I would argue that the way in which Tyler tells this story is as much a sonic experience as it is a lyrical one. The production all over this thing is relentlessly and consistently immersive, bringing you into the mind of Tyler through atmospheric synths, aggressive base, and cosmic transitions that are seamless enough to make your jaw drop. Somehow Tyler manages to maintain a somewhat low-fi and gritty aesthetic despite the production all over this thing being so grandiose and engulfing. I am absolutely in love with the way that “IGOR’S THEME” cascades into “EARFQUAKE” and how the latter turns into “I THINK”. I think (no pun intended) that it is moments like these that really speak to the depth and artistry of this project. Outside of some of the pure greatness and obviously next level production that this project offers, it also contains moments that make you want to turn up the volume on your stereo system or simply get up and start dancing around the room. Soul inspired tunes like “A BOY IS A GUN*” or complete bangers like “WHAT’S GOOD”, simultaneously keep the narrative afloat while also acting as moments that contain massive pop appeal. Tyler also doesn’t forget to mix in some cold blooded bars aloft all of the soulful R&B cuts like on: “WHAT’S GOOD”. One of the most beautiful things about this project is where it fits in Tylers growing discography. As if Flower Boy didn’t fully accomplish this, IGOR feels like the logical next step for Tyler that no one knew they needed.
